Voltaggio brothers fans who haven’t yet experienced the throwback cuisine at their Mandalay Bay residency, Retro By Voltaggio will need to act quickly. MGM Resorts International has announced that June 29 will be the restaurant’s final day of service.
Chefs Michael and Bryan Voltaggio took over the former Aureole space last May for what was described as a one-year culinary residency, celebrating the beloved foods of their childhoods. The menu offers fine-dining takes on comfort food classics in dishes like chicken pot pie with black truffle sauce, beef cheek pot roast in a CorningWare bowl, blue crab Pop Tarts, brioche pepperoni rolls and an upscale spin on the classic pasta-in-a-can SpaghettiOs, which they dubbed Voltaggi O’s. To complement the cuisine, they filled the spacious dining room (and its former wine tower) with memorabilia, art and toys from the 80s and 90s.
In a press release announcing the closing date, the brothers said, “We had a blast bringing Retro to Las Vegas. Thank you to the Mandalay Bay team and the many creative partners who brought our vision to life. And to all the diners who visited and geeked out on the experience, we appreciate you and hope to serve you again real soon.”
Mandalay Bay’s V.P. of Food and Beverage Philippa Hayes says, “Michael and Bryan’s style, creativity, and renowned hospitality are at the forefront in all they do. Retro was a labor of love that utilized all their talents, and it was evident in every touchpoint of the restaurant. We want to thank them for their time and commitment to the culinary residency program and can’t wait to see what they cook up next.”
There’s no word on whether the brothers-who operate a steakhouse together in Maryland’s MGM National Harbor resort-have any immediate plans for another Las Vegas project. They have a long history in our town, having hosted multiple pop-ups at Bellagio’s Harvest in the years before opening Retro.
