Pick of the Week: Café Landwer

Landwer Coffee was founded in 1919 as a small coffee roasting facility in Berlin, Germany. With the rise of the Nazi Party the Landwer family relocated to Israel and, after opening Tel Aviv’s first coffee roasting house in 1933, grew into one of Israel’s most beloved brands. In 2004, the Mediterranean-inspired Cafe Landwer was launched, expanding its food menu and growing to 80 locations in Israel before making its North American debut in 2018. It currently has 14 locations in Toronto, Boston, Los Angeles, North Miami Beach, and now Las Vegas.

The newly opened location in Boca Park (8704 W Charleston Blvd, Suite 101) is set in the space formerly occupied by Chinglish Wine Bar and spans 4,800-square-feet, offering both indoor and outdoor dining, with a spacious corner patio outfitted with umbrellas and an awning. A highlight of the main dining room’s décor is the white, light green, and black floor tiles in a pattern of 3D geometric blocks.

GM/Co-Owner Amir Mor describes the venue as a coffee shop inside a restaurant and explained why he chose to open in Boca Park: “Las Vegas is amazing for culinary. But I felt the Strip was too risky and after coming here I fell in love with Summerlin.” He also shared that everything is made in-house and 70% of the menu is the same as in Israel. The best-selling menu items are the Famous Schnitzel (chicken breast pounded thin, breaded, and fried), Mediterranean Fattoush Salad (feta, Kalamata olives, za’atar pita crunch, cucumber, lettuce, and lemon mint dressing), Landwer Famous Breakfast (two eggs, chopped salad, Greek yogurt parfait, honey and jam, and pita bread), and the addictive housemade Rosalach (rolled and filled Israeli cookies, similar to pizza dough) in rotating flavors such as Lotus and Nutella.

True to its roots, there’s a coffee bar serving a wide range of hot beverages like Turkish coffee, latte, cappuccino, and cortado. Cold beverages are highlighted by Mint Leaf Lemonade Granita (a common drink in Israel); Mediterranean Energy Shake with tahini, date, banana, date syrup, and soy milk; and the Recanati Yasmin White, a dry white wine from Israel that is a blend of 60% Sauvignon Blanc and 40% French Colombard.

Other Mediterranean delights include Chicken Shawarma made with chicken thighs served with hummus and warm pita; Farmer’s Market Cauliflower baked with silan served with tahini and fresh salsa; Roasted Eggplant & Tahini served with sesame seeds, green onions, lemon mint dressing, and choice of bread; and Chopped Israeli Salad with cucumbers, tomatoes, and onions.

A key ingredient to this restaurant that makes it a must-try is the fact that the menu is quite varied, and unless you’ve spent much time in the Mediterranean, there are most likely several new taste sensations awaiting which will surely bring you back for more.

Cafe Landwer is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. For more info visit landwercafe.com.
