Pick of the Week: Bar Boheme

Co-owners James Trees, Keith Bracewell, and Michael McGraw have opened their new Arts District French restaurant, Bar Boheme, located at 1401 S Main (SE corner of Imperial and Main).

The 120-seat restaurant is situated in a building that was a former auto repair shop and most recently a tie-dye shop that has been completely transformed. The décor includes expansive windows overlooking Main Street in the heart of the Las Vegas Arts District, a zebra marble bar, teal and mauve banquettes, wicker backed chairs, an open terrace overlooking a private grassy space which will eventually be used for special events, tables covered in white tablecloths, and a botanical feel with floral wall décor, flower-inspired artwork, and live plants.

Chef James Trees has been so hugely successful with his Italian eateries (Esther’s KitchenAl Solito Posto, and Ada’s Food + Wine) that you wouldn’t be blamed for assuming he is solely Italian-focused. However, Chef James asserts, “French cuisine was absolutely my first love. I’ve been wanting to open this restaurant for years.” The French cuisine is a return to his roots, as during his time at the Culinary Institute of America, he interned at Café Boulud in NYC, and after graduating, spent time in the kitchens of Alize and Andre’s with legendary Chef Andre Rochat.

Attention to detail and ingenious use of ingredients are quite evident in both presentation and preparation of the French delights. Case in point are the frites, which are rinsed in hot water to remove starch, steamed and blanched at low heat, then fried and finished in dry-aged beef fat and French sea salt. Other examples are Parisian-style baguettes made with T65 French flour (the only restaurant in Nevada using it); Steak Tartare with quail egg, tarragon and pepper mustard, pickled onion, and radish; Boeuf Bourguignon with red wine-braised short rib (instead of the traditional shoulder cut), matignon, and pomme de terre aux chevre; Mary’s Duck with duck breast, orange duck jus, and duck leg confit; Roasted Bone Marrow with shallot jam and brule tarragon salt/sugar; and Apple Tart Tatin made with sherry and brandy served with foie gras ice cream.

The wine list is unique and 100% French with reasonably priced wines of value and quality from the traditional regions of Burgundy, Bordeaux, Rhone, Loire, and Champagne. A few examples are 2022 Lucien Albrecht Reisling, 2019 Bouchard Aine & Fils Bourgogne Rouge Pinot Noir, and 2022 Sauternes Château Roûmieu-Lacoste.

Bar Boheme is open daily from 5 to 11 p.m. and is the final phase of the French-inspired project, including the Paris-inspired cocktail bar Petite Boheme situated at the rear of the property, open daily from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Chalk It Down! Arts District Chalk Festival — April 19

The second annual Chalk It Down! Arts District Chalk Festival will be held on the 18b streets of Main and Imperial, which will be shut down from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The free family-friendly event will feature colorful 5’ x 5’ pavement creations by local artists competing for a $1000 prize purse on the sidewalks in front of the neighborhood’s local shops, cafés, and boutiques, along with sponsoring businesses. To commemorate the event, a featured chalk mural will be created by last year’s chalk art winner, Cody Wombold.

Market in the Alley will host an expanded monthly market with 100+ local artisans, vintage curators, food purveyors, and small businesses. There will be a Kids’ Zone featuring many activities and programming specifically for kids, and the Horse Trailer Hideout Stage, located on Imperial Ave., will feature local musicians performing acoustic sets throughout the day. Set next to the stage, the beer garden, activated by The Nevada Craft Brewers Association, will pour local beers and beverages for those 21+. Also special for the day, participating food and beverage outlets in the neighborhood can serve drinks to go.
