Pick of the Week: Mijo Modern Mexican

Mijo is a Spanish term of endearment, and after dining at this coastal Mexican restaurant at the Durango Casino & Resort, you’ll likely feel affection for this unique eatery. While the coastal theme is prevalent through an array of seafood on the menu, an added plus is the use of a wood-fired grill to add a touch of smoked BBQ flavors to the offerings.

PC: Rodrigo Hernandez

Your first introduction to Mijo Modern Mexican Restaurant is through the entryway with naturesque features of marigold flower art and terracotta brick amidst tequila lockers and a hidden passageway to a speakeasy (more on that later). Within are three dining areas, the first being inspired by the agave plant with deep blue, warm beige, and sandy hues; a center oval-shaped bar and multi-level shelves lined with tequila and mezcal bottles. Beyond is a brighter ambience bringing natural light from large windows, and the 1,958-square-foot outdoor patio is even more luminous with a Tulum vibe and couchlike seating.

Size matters here, and the menu is designed to be shared. After seeing the size of some of the offerings, it’s easy to see why. Examples are the butter-poached and grilled two-pound Puerto Nuevo Grilled Lobster, the Prime 55-ounce Grilled Tomahawk, and the two-pound Charred Moroccan Octopus. I would also add the Surf & Turf Burrito (shrimp and carne asada) to the list, for when it arrived at my table, I was amazed at its size, and while I have never been accused of being a light eater, I wound up taking most of this monster home.

Appetizers offer several fruits of the sea, like tiraditos featuring Blue Fin Tuna with mango and pickled shallot and Hamachi with orange and cucumber; and Sea Bass Ceviche with tomatoes, cucumber, corn, avocado, and leche de tigre.

Traditional Mexican cuisine is also available but enhanced, like Quesabirria Tacos with shredded beef and consommé, and Lobster and corn Tostadas with avocado and chipotle mayo.

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday brunch is served, with highlights including Churro French Toast—brioche bread soaked in tres leches custard topped with fresh strawberries, guava syrup, and Bavarian cream; Birria Torta Dip, a sandwich with shredded beef, crispy cheese, and consommé served in a toasted Bolillo; and Huevos Benedictinos, a twist on the classic eggs Benedict featuring seasoned ham, creamy avocado, poached eggs, and chili Hollandaise sauce.

The dessert menu is highlighted by Mexican Twinkies—chocolate-coated vanilla pound cake, strawberry guava, and marshmallow—and Churro Churro Churro—a trio of chocolate, strawberry, and dulce de leche served with cinnamon/chocolate sauce and tres leches crème anglaise.

Not surprisingly, as a bevy of tequila and mescal bottles is part of the décor, the agave-based spirits are plentiful here, with more than 70 choices of both aged and non-aged versions of Tequila and mescal. Signature cocktails include the El Tesoro with Flecha Azul Cristalino, clarified lime juice, Cointreau, and cane sugar.

As previously mentioned, a secret door in the entryway provides access to the 1,000-square-foot Wax Rabbit speakeasy where live music is performed nightly and DJs spin vinyl records that set a nostalgic mood.

Mijo Modern Mexican Restaurant is open from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 4 to 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and happy hour is 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday through Thursday.

Cheba Hut Offering Subs for $4.20

The Cheba Hut “Toasted” Subs concept was created in Tempe, AZ, in 1998 by founder Scott Jennings as a counter-culture haven, so it should come as no surprise that the first marijuana-themed sandwich “joint” celebrates the unofficial holiday of 4/20.

The names cheba and toasted are both slang references to marijuana, as are several of the sandwich names, such as La Canna, Chronic, and Pakalolo. This year, you can visit your favorite Cheba Hut location (six in Southern Nevada) to indulge in their 4-inch Nug Subs for $4.20 all day. You’ll also receive a free Cheba Hut-branded frisbee, which has become a bit of a collector’s item, as The Hut has designed a new version for each of the past 20 years.
