Bar Zazu — November 21

Bar Zazu at Resorts World is continuing its cocktail class series entitled Spirit of Zazu. The hands-on cocktail class led by one of its acclaimed mixologists will feature two autumn-themed cocktails:

  • Fig-Get About It—A riff on a classic Old Fashion with the sweet richness of figs and the tart brightness of strawberries working to balance the spice of Elijah Craig Rye
  • Off the Vine—a green grape cocktail with VSOP Cognac and dessert wine from Hardy, a pinch of cinnamon to amplify the baking spice, a touch of Italian Amaro for more profound complexity, and the drink is softened with floral lavender and balanced with cold-pressed lime juice.

While mixing, shaking, and stirring, guests will enjoy light bites and live music by one of Bar Zazu’s resident artists. The class will begin at 7 p.m.; tickets are $45 per person plus tax and fees. To purchase tickets, click here.

Pick of the Week: Main Street Provisions

Main Street Provisions was one of the first upscale eateries to open in the Arts District. Since its opening in December 2020, it has become a true downtown dining destination.

The self-described community-oriented restaurant serving modern American comfort food through a re-imagined melting pot is the creation of Owner Kim Owens. The Louisiana-born industry veteran got her first assistant manager position at 21 and spent 17 years with Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse as vice president of operations, giving her a wealth of experience in food and beverage service, which she is putting to good use in her restaurant. Owens is a highly hands-on owner and works with her staff to run as a team that realizes they need to wow the customer so they keep coming back.

The ambience is warm, open, airy, and inviting. It includes locally sourced artwork throughout the restaurant, large windows, a warm and cozy color scheme of harvest gold, avocado green, and Caribbean blue, brick walls, concrete flooring, and wood ceiling trusses that are all original to the 1947 building.

Owens has a knack for attracting very high-quality chefs because she “is the type of operator that allows chefs a large amount of creativity.” Accomplished chefs who have helmed the kitchen include Justin Kingsley Hall and Patrick Munster. For the past year and a half, southern California expat Adrian Garcia, who trained with Rick Bayless, has stepped into the executive chef position after serving as sous chef for a year. His Mexican heritage shines through in some dishes he has brought to the menu, like Spanish Octopus with an adobo marinade, Oven Roasted Chicken with mole poblano, and Sticky Toffee Pudding with Mexican demerara sugar.

The ingredient-driven menu changes seasonally every two to three months based on what’s fresh and available. Not surprisingly, with Owens’ steakhouse roots, there is always an excellent selection of carefully sourced steaks like the well-marbled 18-ounce ribeye from Western Reserve Beef in Hastings, Nebraska.

This modern American comfort food eatery offers dishes with global influences like The Crudo—currently Hawaiian ahi with in-house pickled Persian cucumber, shallots, serrano, and ponzu; Fry Bread & Dips with hominy and chickpea hummus, tahini, pickled asparagus and herbs; Short Rib with Korean sticky sauce, sesame seeds and cauliflower rice; and soy and ginger poached Pacific Cod with bok choy, Chinese broccoli, pickled shiitake mushrooms, and miso sake broth.

Do yourself a favor and don’t skimp on the sides, as there are some true gems: Butter Whipped Potatoes with cream that gives Robuchon a run for his money; Roasted Cauliflower with Romesco sauce, feta, golden raisins, and toasted almonds; and Spiced Baby Carrots with sheep’s yogurt sauce that this avowed carrot hater absolutely loved.

The cocktail menu is also globally influenced and is conveniently divided into sections of Boozy, Refreshing, After-dinner, and PG-13, like the Refreshing Buenos Diaz with Kaffir-infused Mezcal, Aperol, Strega, pineapple gomme, and lime. A lot of love is shown to the community breweries, with seven local beers offered from CraftHaus, HUDL, Las Vegas Brewing Co, and Tenaya Creek.

With the superb quality of the offerings and unique menu creations, you might think the prices would reflect that, but you’d be wrong. They are quite reasonable for the stellar dining experience you can expect here. Starters range from $16 to $28, entrees from $26 to $39, sides from $6 to $15, and a great deal on the 6-ounce Filet Mignon for $46.

Main Street Provisions is open Monday through Friday from 4:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Mob Museum — November 15

The Mob Museum, AKA the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, will offer free museum admission for Nevada residents and buy-one, get-one admission for non-residents on November 15. The deal is to celebrate Kefauver Day, commemorating the U.S. Senate investigative committee hearing on organized crime in interstate commerce in the Museum’s courtroom on Nov. 15, 1950. Held in 14 U.S. cities from 1950 to 1951, the Kefauver hearings were pivotal in the national fight against organized crime and events that influenced the development of Las Vegas.

Visitors will also be able to enjoy a display of vintage Cadillacs courtesy of Las Vegas’ Cadillac Club.

In addition to free admission for Nevada residents, all guests will receive 10% off retail and food and beverages inside The Underground speakeasy and at Museum concessions. Guests may obtain their free admission in person at the museum box office on a first-come, first-served basis. Any identification that lists your name with a Nevada address as your official residence will be accepted, including a driver’s license, utility bill or bank statement.

The Mob Museum will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and the car show will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., weather permitting.
