Pick of the Week: China Mama Palace Station
The family-owned China Mama, which has established a local following serving the community with traditional Chinese cuisine, now has five restaurants, including its newly opened location within Palace Station.
Set in the former space of Boathouse Asian Eatery across from Tailgate Social on the northeast side of the property, the décor features hanging paper lantern lights, a sushi bar, an open kitchen, floor-to-ceiling windows, several TVs, a private dining room, and a beige, brown and red color scheme.
While the offerings are mainly traditional Chinese dishes from the Shandong province of Northern China (from where Owner Ivy Ma hails), a sushi bar offers a mix of sashimi and rolls. I highly recommend the Mama Roll with spicy bluefin tuna, “krab,” salmon, avocado, tobiko caviar and Mama Sauce.
Must-haves on the traditional Chinese menu include Crispy Beef with beef strips, carrot strips and minced garlic; Sizzling Beef in Black Pepper Sauce with beef tenderloin, celery, carrot slices, onion, and crushed black pepper; Fresh Shrimp Spring Roll; Twice Cooked Pork with pork belly, Napa cabbage, green and red bell pepper, and chili bean paste; Soup Dumpling with options of shrimp, pork, and sea urchin; and Orange Chicken with white meat chicken, orange peel, and broccoli.
There are also live seafood offerings of Geoduck, Dungeness Crab, Poached Santa Barbara Spot Prawns, Steamed Soon Hock Fish, and Steamed Coral Cod.
China Mama is open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. until midnight on Friday and Saturday.

Petite Boheme is Now Open in the Arts District
Co-owners James Trees and Keith Bracewell have unveiled their latest venture, Petite Boheme, a precursor to their Bar Boheme opening this spring. Housed in a reclaimed transmission shop at 1407 S. Main Street, a few blocks south of Trees’ iconic Esther’s Kitchen Italian restaurant, the small non-gaming bar aims to recall Paris, France, with a twelve-seat polished marble bar, original street art by local artist Rocky Asbury, eclectic wicker and velveteen seating, vintage Persian rugs, and outdoor seating accented by strings of café lights and heaters.
The bar program under Bar Manager Jonah Gibbs includes uncommon classics, new inspirations, and a martini program offering several varieties – all served with chilled sidecars. Examples are the Metro de Paris with rum, nocino, and amontillado; and French Pearl with gin, Pernod, lime, and mint. The craft cocktails are complemented by a dozen or so snacks curated by Executive Chef Ramtin Yashar.
